Mission

Don’t skim your story.

National Champion cyclist Jake Boykin was killed by a drunk driver on September 23, 2023, in Tallahassee, Florida, while training for his next big race.

In the spring of 2021, Jake wrote the words “Don’t skim your story” on his whiteboard. That is how he lived — full gas, curious about everything, and bringing a lot of people along with him. This site, and the work that carries his name, exist so that his story keeps doing that.

Our mission

Don’t Skim Your Story works to:

End drunk driving — by telling Jake’s story, supporting MADD, and making the cost of one decision impossible to ignore.

Make cycling safer — by supporting cycling safety education and the organizations protecting vulnerable road users.

Help people live their full story — by supporting education and the communities Jake was part of, in the places he lived, learned, and raced.

The Jake Boykin Memorial Fund

Donations are held in the Jake Boykin Memorial Fund at the Community Foundation of North Florida, a 501(c)(3) organization. The fund makes grants to charities and universities supporting cycling, cycling safety, education, and awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving.

The fund has supported, among others: MADD (Walk Like MADD, Ride Like MADD, and Hike Like MADD events in Florida and California), BikeFriendlyATL, VRU-NM (Vulnerable Road Users New Mexico), the Tallahassee Thunder Youth Mountain Bike Team, Gustavus Adolphus College, City of Hope – Irvine, and bikes4Juarez.
